Learning Hand Lettering

I love the look of hand lettering, but I never thought about it being something that I could do myself. That is, until I came across a course being offered by Caroline Winegeart, an acquaintance I met in 2011 when we both worked at advertising agencies and were at the same conference in Jacksonville, Florida. I have followed Caroline’s online musings as she ultimately developed her passions into a business that I admire and that inspires me daily.

When Caroline’s Better Lettering Course became available as a series of online videos with step-by-step instructions and exercises for continuing the practice even after the course, I was quick to pay the $20 course fee and start the videos. It has now been over a year since I first took the course, but I still go back and reference the videos and maintain my lettering practice.

The course was great for someone like me who was starting with zero experience. Caroline starts from the very, very beginning with pencil and steps it through to taking your designs digital, which I LOVED.

I have really enjoyed keeping up with how other people progress through the course as Caroline shares some of her favorite #BetterLetteringCourse posts on her Instagram. It is a consistent reminder and motivation to get my sketchpad and pens out and maintain a hand lettering practice. And she is great about growing her own skills and sharing what she learns along the way so that we can all grow with her.

Here are a few of my favorite hand lettered drawings I did over the past year:

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says stay curious

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says spend time alone

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says be an independent thinker

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says the cure for boredom is curiosity there is no cure for curiosity

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says i write my shit list in sharpie

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says yeaux leaux

hand lettering by emily reeves that says the curious rebel

hand lettering by emily reeves dean that says don't talk unless you can improve the silence
