Mac Guy Reflects Real Mac Owners

Filed under: Advertising, Culture, Current Events, Marketing, Technology — Emily Reeves @ 11:11 am

This is from an article in Advertising Age:

“Research from internet ad network Mindset Media confirms the ad’s personification of Mac users as superior and self-satisfied.  Its recent Mac user ‘mind-set profile’–a psychographic ranking system that scores respondents on 20 different elements of personality–found them to be more assured of their superiority, less modest and more open of the general population.”

“Far fewer cohesive personality traits emerged among PC owners, likely because of the breadth of PC ownership.  Given that 95% or so of all computer users own a PC, those users essentially are the general population.  The one area where PC users did stand out as statistically different was in creativity–low creativity, that is.  Mindset Media found they tend to be realists who are emotionally steady and work well with what they’re given.”

This makes total sense.  I don’t think research really had to be conducted to learn these things, but it is interesting that now there are statistics to confirm it.

  1. This is a hilarious stereotype. And it’s so true, at least for me it is. I’m an Art Director. (Mac User) I’m socially and politically liberal and extremely laid back. (Not Dogmatic) I’m a confident–sometimes arrogant–extraordinarily clever, cute 25 year old baby brother that thinks he’s better than a lot of people–mostly dumb people–that is completely starved for attention. (Superior, Not Modest) I love Starbucks, observing and predicting humanity’s true emotion, and want a hybrid real bad. (Open) I’m an OCD graphic designer with versionitis. And all my pins are straight on my desk. (Perfectionist) I pick up trash when I walk down the street just because I don’t want anymore Indians shedding a single tear–rips me apart inside.(Eco-minded Greenies) I love my Mac and I never take anything back to the store, at first I thought it was a “guy thing”, then realized I’m lazy. (Satisfied With Their Purchase) I’m closing in on 10,000 songs, and I love my library. I love sharing music with people. And–to iTunes gratification–I’ve bought most of it, I import CDs too.(Music Maven)

  2. By the way, I am a Mac user at home. So please don’t get offended Mac users - I am one myself and that is how I know this portrayal is accurate! I heart Mac and all those who use one.
